VPT Energy Systems Receives Sandia National Labs SEGIS Award

(8/13/2008)

VPT Energy Systems (Blacksburg, VA) with the Center for Power Electronic Systems at Virginia Tech, Plug-in Conversions Corp., SolarConnexion, Breakell Inc., and Delta Electronics  has received a Stage 1 award from the Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office.  The program, designated the Solar Energy Grid Integration Systems (SEGIS) program,  aims to develop products that connect solar power systems with the electrical grid in an interactive way.   The Energy Department’s Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM will provide project management support to these projects.

VPT Energy Systems'  SEGIS proposal is to develop components and overall system designs for integrated energy systems that include plug-connected vehicles and distributed energy resources.  The R&D includes inverter controllers that can be used with existing inverters to add sophisticated grid interoperability, active anti-islanding, and intentional islanding control.  VPT Energy Systems will also develop unique bidirectional power converters for use in plug-connected vehicles and distributed energy sources.  While the focus of this effort is the advancement of on-vehicle power conversion devices, the research and product development also has application for stationary DC/AC grid-interactive applications.
